Bacteria in Pennsylvania Well Water
Private wells aren’t monitored by government agencies. You’re responsible for testing and treatment — and the numbers are concerning.
Discolored well water — bacteria often accompanies iron and sediment contamination
Penn State Research Findings
Studies by Penn State Extension show that approximately half of Pennsylvania’s private wells test positive for coliform bacteria. Many homeowners don’t know because they’ve never tested — or haven’t tested recently.
Coliform bacteria indicate potential contamination from surface water, animal waste, or septic systems. While not all coliform bacteria cause illness, their presence suggests your well may be vulnerable to harmful pathogens like E. coli.
Invisible Threat
Bacteria contamination has no taste, smell, or visible signs. Your water can look perfectly clear and still contain harmful microorganisms.
Can Change Anytime
A well that tested clean last year can become contaminated. Heavy rain, flooding, nearby construction, or septic issues can introduce bacteria at any time.
Health Risks
Harmful bacteria can cause gastrointestinal illness, especially dangerous for children, elderly, pregnant women, and immunocompromised individuals.
Your Responsibility
Unlike municipal water, private wells have no required testing or treatment. It’s entirely up to you to ensure your family’s water is safe to drink.
Common Bacterial Concerns in Well Water
Not all bacteria are the same. Here’s what we test for and what it means for your household.
Total Coliform
What it is: A group of bacteria found naturally in soil, plants, and the intestines of warm-blooded animals.
What it means: Presence indicates your well may be vulnerable to surface contamination. It’s a warning sign that your well’s integrity may be compromised.
Health risk: Most total coliform bacteria don’t cause illness directly, but their presence suggests potential for more harmful organisms.
E. coli
What it is: A specific type of coliform found only in the intestines of humans and animals. Indicates fecal contamination.
What it means: Your well has been contaminated by human or animal waste — possibly from a failing septic system, agricultural runoff, or animal access.
Health risk: Can cause serious gastrointestinal illness. Some strains are particularly dangerous. Requires immediate attention.
Iron Bacteria
What it is: Bacteria that feed on iron in groundwater and create slimy deposits. Not the same as dissolved iron.
What it means: You may see reddish-brown slime in toilet tanks, reduced water flow from biofilm buildup, and musty or swampy odors.
Health risk: Generally not harmful to health, but creates aesthetic problems and can clog pipes and equipment. Requires specialized treatment.
Sulfur-Reducing Bacteria
What it is: Bacteria that produce hydrogen sulfide gas as they digest sulfur compounds in groundwater.
What it means: The “rotten egg” smell in your water may be caused by these bacteria rather than (or in addition to) naturally occurring sulfur.
Health risk: Generally not harmful at typical levels, but the odor makes water unpleasant to use. Treatment approach differs from chemical sulfur.
UV Disinfection: How It Works
Ultraviolet (UV) light provides chemical-free disinfection by disrupting the DNA of microorganisms — no chemicals, no taste change, no byproducts.
Complete filtration system with UV disinfection stage — installed by Cesare’s
Water Enters Chamber
Water flows through a stainless steel chamber containing a UV lamp designed for water treatment applications.
UV Light Exposure
The UV lamp emits light at a specific wavelength (254 nm) that penetrates microorganisms as water passes through.
DNA Disruption
UV energy damages the DNA of bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms, preventing them from reproducing.
Clean Water Exits
Treated water continues to your home with no chemicals added and no change to taste, odor, or mineral content.
Why UV Disinfection?

What UV Does & Doesn’t Do
UV is an excellent disinfection tool, but it’s important to understand its role in a complete treatment system.
✓ What UV Does
- Helps inactivate bacteria, viruses, and protozoa
- Provides chemical-free disinfection
- Works as a final treatment stage
- Reduces microbial risk when properly maintained
- Treats water continuously as it flows
- Leaves no chemical residue in treated water
✗ What UV Doesn’t Do
- Remove iron, manganese, or sulfur
- Soften hard water or remove scale
- Filter sediment or particles
- Correct pH or water acidity
- Improve taste (beyond removing bacteria)
- Provide residual protection in pipes
Pre-Treatment Often Required
UV works best on clear water. If your well has iron, sediment, or hardness, pre-filtration with Custom-Designed media is typically needed before UV treatment. Particles can shield bacteria from UV light, reducing effectiveness. We design complete systems that address all your water quality issues in the correct treatment sequence — not just UV in isolation.
When to Consider UV Treatment
UV disinfection is recommended in several situations for private well owners across Pennsylvania.
Positive Bacteria Test
If your well has tested positive for coliform or E. coli, UV provides ongoing protection after addressing the contamination source.
Vulnerable Household Members
Homes with infants, elderly, pregnant women, or immunocompromised individuals benefit from extra disinfection protection.
Shallow or Older Wells
Shallow wells and older well constructions are more susceptible to surface water infiltration and bacterial contamination.
Nearby Contamination Sources
Properties near farms, septic systems, or areas with known groundwater issues benefit from UV as an ongoing precaution.
Peace of Mind
Many well owners choose UV simply for the assurance that their family’s drinking water has an additional layer of protection.

How We Approach Bacteria Treatment
We don’t just install UV — we identify the complete picture and design appropriate protection for your specific well.
Bacteria Testing
We test for total coliform and E. coli to understand what you’re dealing with. Additional testing for iron bacteria and sulfur-reducing bacteria may be recommended based on your situation.
Source Investigation
Positive tests prompt investigation. Is it a well construction issue? Nearby contamination? Understanding the source helps determine the right long-term response.
Complete Water Analysis
We test for hardness, iron, pH, TDS, chlorine, manganese, and sulfur too — UV requires clear water to work effectively, so pre-treatment with Custom-Designed media may be needed.
Custom System Design
We custom-engineer a complete treatment system — not just UV, but any pre-filtration needed — properly sized for your household flow rates and water chemistry.
Professional Installation
Owner-installed with attention to detail. UV positioned correctly in the treatment sequence, proper electrical connections, and performance verification before we leave.
Ongoing Support
We explain simple maintenance — annual lamp replacement, periodic sleeve cleaning — and provide ongoing support backed by up to 10-year warranty (terms apply). 24/7 emergency service available.

Bacteria & UV Treatment FAQs
Does UV kill 100% of bacteria?
We don’t claim UV “kills 100%” or “sterilizes” water. UV is designed to help inactivate microorganisms and reduce microbial risk when properly sized, installed, and maintained. Effectiveness depends on UV dose, flow rate, water clarity, and lamp condition. That’s why proper system design and maintenance matter.
How often does the UV lamp need replacement?
UV lamps should typically be replaced annually, even if they still light up. UV output decreases over time, and a lamp that looks fine may not be providing adequate disinfection. We’ll explain the maintenance schedule for your specific system and can handle lamp replacements for you.
Will UV remove the rotten egg smell from my water?
No. UV is specifically for disinfection — it doesn’t remove sulfur, iron, or other contaminants that cause odors. If you have sulfur smell, you need sulfur treatment in addition to (or instead of) UV. We test for everything and design complete solutions.
Is UV safe? Does it make water radioactive?
UV treatment is completely safe. The UV light stays inside the sealed stainless steel chamber — you’re never exposed to it. Water passes through, receives the UV dose, and exits with no residual radiation or byproducts. UV disinfection has been used safely in water treatment for decades.
What if my water has iron or sediment?
UV works best on clear water. Particles can shield bacteria from UV light, reducing effectiveness. If your well has iron, sediment, or turbidity, we’ll design Custom-Designed media pre-filtration before the UV stage. This is why complete water testing matters before any system design.
Can I just shock chlorinate instead of installing UV?
Shock chlorination can temporarily eliminate bacteria, but it doesn’t provide ongoing protection. If your well is vulnerable to contamination, bacteria can return within weeks or months. UV provides continuous disinfection every time water enters your home — 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
How much does UV treatment cost?
UV system cost depends on your flow rate requirements and whether pre-filtration is needed. A simple UV-only addition costs less than a complete multi-stage system with iron removal, softening, and UV. We provide transparent pricing after your on-site water analysis. Financing and system leasing available (terms apply).
Do I still need to test my water after installing UV?
Yes. We recommend periodic testing to verify your system is working properly and to catch any changes in your well water chemistry over time. Annual testing is a good practice for all private well owners, and we can coordinate testing as part of your system maintenance.
What causes bacteria in well water?
Common causes include surface water infiltration through cracks in the well casing, compromised well caps, nearby septic system failures, agricultural runoff, flooding events, and construction activity that disturbs groundwater flow. Sometimes the source is obvious; other times investigation is needed to identify the entry point.
