A rotten egg odor in well water is usually dissolved hydrogen sulfide gas (H₂S) or sulfur-producing bacteria. Groundwater picks up hydrogen sulfide as it moves through organic material and sulfur-containing minerals, and under low-oxygen conditions bacteria can convert dissolved sulfate into sulfide.

Is Rotten Egg Water Dangerous — and Why Is It So Common Here?

At household levels, hydrogen sulfide is generally treated as a taste-and-odor problem, not a health violation. It has no federal health-based drinking water standard because it makes water unpleasant long before it would reach a harmful level.

But smell cannot tell you whether water is safe. Coliform bacteria, nitrate, lead, and PFAS have no odor at all. Water can smell awful and be clean, or smell fine and still contain something worth knowing about.

As for why it keeps turning up here: Southwestern PA sits on layered sandstone, shale, limestone, and coal-bearing rock. Where groundwater meets pyrite and organic material, it can release both sulfur compounds and iron — which is exactly why a single odor filter so often fails in this region.

Why testing has to happen here

Hydrogen sulfide is a dissolved gas, and it escapes. Penn State Extension advises testing in the home or chemically stabilizing the sample before transport — because an untreated sample loses gas on the drive to a lab and reads lower than the water actually is. That single detail is how most systems end up undersized, and it is why we will not quote a sulfur system from a description over the phone.

Common Fixes — and Why the Smell Comes Back

Most of what gets recommended for sulfur odor does not actually treat dissolved hydrogen sulfide. Here is what each one really does.

A well near Ligonier fought a rotten-egg odor that kept coming back: a strong sulfur smell at both the hot and cold taps, returning shortly after earlier treatment attempts because the underlying chemistry was never fully corrected.

Problem

On-site field analysis measured hydrogen sulfide at 2.8 ppm alongside 1.7 ppm iron, a pH of 5.9 and moderately hard water. Earlier work by other companies had not addressed the acidic, oxygen-poor chemistry driving the odor.

Treatment

Why does my well water smell like rotten eggs?
The smell is usually caused by dissolved hydrogen sulfide gas (H₂S) or sulfur-producing bacteria. Is sulfur water safe to drink?
The odor by itself cannot tell you whether the water is safe. At levels normally found in homes, hydrogen sulfide is generally treated as a taste-and-odor issue rather than a health violation, and it has no federal health-based drinking water standard. But bacteria, nitrate, lead, and PFAS have no smell at all, so a private well should still be tested for those separately.
What is the difference between sulfur, hydrogen sulfide, and sulfate?
“Sulfur water” is the everyday phrase; hydrogen sulfide is the actual gas that smells. Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) is the dissolved gas responsible for the rotten egg odor. Sulfate is a different dissolved mineral form of sulfur and does not create that odor on its own. Sulfur bacteria are microorganisms that can contribute to H₂S formation and to slime in wells and plumbing.
Why does the smell get worse in the shower?
Spraying, heating, and agitating water releases dissolved gas into the air faster. A shower does all three at once, in an enclosed space, which is why the odor is often most obvious there even when the concentration has not changed.
Why does only my hot water smell like rotten eggs?
Hot-water-only odor often points to the water heater rather than the well. Sulfur bacteria can live in the tank, and the magnesium anode rod found in many water heaters can supply electrons that help convert sulfate into hydrogen sulfide gas. Before installing whole-house treatment, the untreated cold water should be tested to confirm whether H₂S is present in the source water at all.
Can a water softener remove sulfur smell?
No. A water softener is designed to remove hardness minerals through ion exchange, not dissolved hydrogen sulfide gas. Homes with both problems normally need sulfur treatment installed ahead of the softener, which also protects the softener resin from fouling.
Will an activated carbon filter remove rotten egg odor?
Carbon can reduce a very light odor, but it exhausts quickly under a persistent or higher sulfur load. That is why a carbon cartridge often works for a few weeks and then the smell returns. The treatment has to be selected based on the measured concentration and the rest of the water chemistry.
Does boiling water get rid of the sulfur smell?
Heating drives off some dissolved gas, which can reduce the odor in that pot of water temporarily. It does nothing for the well, the plumbing, or the water used everywhere else in the house.
Can sulfur bacteria create slime in my well or plumbing?
Yes. Sulfur and iron bacteria can produce slime or biofilm in wells, plumbing, and treatment equipment. When a biological problem is present, a disinfection strategy is usually needed alongside filtration — odor media alone will not resolve an active bacterial source.
Can hydrogen sulfide damage my plumbing?
It can contribute to corrosion and tarnishing. Hydrogen sulfide tarnishes silver and can contribute to corrosion of metals including iron, copper, and brass. When sulfur appears alongside acidic water, as it often does here, the corrosion risk is higher and the pH usually needs correcting as part of the treatment.
Why did my sulfur filter stop working?
Usually because something outside the sulfur itself was never accounted for. The most common causes are exhausted media, inadequate oxidation, insufficient backwash, bacterial regrowth, low pH interfering with treatment, an undersized system, or iron and manganese that were never included in the original design.
Can sulfur levels change during the year?
Yes. Groundwater level, rainfall, household water use, and bacterial activity all shift with the seasons. That is why we prefer to test when the odor is at its worst and design for peak conditions rather than the mildest sample. We see that seasonal swing most often on wells in Washington, Greene and Fayette counties.
How is hydrogen sulfide properly tested?
It has to be tested in the home, or the sample must be chemically stabilized before transport. Penn State Extension advises this because hydrogen sulfide is a dissolved gas that escapes from an untreated sample on the way to a lab — which produces a reading lower than the water actually is and leads directly to undersized systems.
What is the best sulfur filter for well water?
There is no single best filter for every well. The correct treatment depends on the hydrogen sulfide concentration, pH, iron, manganese, bacteria, household flow rate, and whether the odor is coming from the source water or the hot water system. Two neighboring homes can need genuinely different systems.
Do I need to treat iron and sulfur separately?
Not separately, but they do have to be designed for together. Iron and sulfur are frequently found in the same Southwestern PA wells, and they compete for the same treatment capacity. A system sized for sulfur alone will be overwhelmed by the iron load, and vice versa — which is one of the most common reasons a replacement system fails just like the original.
How much does sulfur removal cost?
