Armstrong County
Water Filtration
Custom-engineered water treatment along the Allegheny River Valley. From the glass heritage of Ford City to the historic streets of Kittanning — clean water for a county built on craftsmanship.
A Valley of Rivers & Glass
Armstrong County was organized March 12, 1800, and named for General John Armstrong, who represented Pennsylvania in the Continental Congress and led the famous 1756 Battle of Kittanning during the French and Indian War.
The Allegheny River defines this county — one of only four gravel-bottom rivers in the world, its glacial sand deposits attracted Captain John B. Ford to establish his plate glass empire. By 1910, the PPG Ford City Works was the largest plate glass factory in the world, employing over 4,000 workers from 35 ethnic groups.
In the 1890s, Water Street in Kittanning was called “Millionaire Row” — home to more millionaires per capita than anywhere in Pennsylvania, their fortunes built on glass, coal, and natural gas.
Water in Armstrong County comes primarily from private wells in this rural landscape. The Allegheny, Kiskiminetas, Buffalo Creek, Redbank Creek, and numerous tributaries carve through the county. Well water here commonly shows hardness, iron, manganese, and sulfur — challenges we’ve solved for three generations.
Armstrong County Water Challenges
What we see most often in the river valley and throughout the county.
Iron-contaminated well water — a common Armstrong County challenge
Hard Water
The most common issue. White scale buildup, spotted dishes, dry skin, and reduced appliance efficiency.
Water Softeners →Iron & Manganese
Orange staining, rust-colored water, black specks. Very common in Armstrong County wells.
Iron Removal →Sulfur / Rotten Egg
Hydrogen sulfide creates that unmistakable smell. Common throughout the county’s well water.
Sulfur Removal →Bacteria & Coliform
Penn State reports half of PA wells fail bacteria standards. Annual testing is essential.
UV Treatment →Low pH / Acidic Water
Blue-green stains on fixtures signal copper pipe corrosion. Requires pH correction.
pH Correction →Sediment & Turbidity
Cloudy water from sand, silt, or clay particles. Common after heavy rains.
Filtration Solutions →Municipal vs. Private Well
Public Systems
Several small municipal authorities serve portions of Armstrong County, including Eastern Armstrong County, Manor Township, Redbank Valley, and South Buffalo Township. Water comes from the Allegheny River and local wells.
Common Issues:
- Hard water scale
- Chlorine taste & odor
- Aging infrastructure
The Majority of Homes
As a rural county, most Armstrong County homes rely on private wells. You are responsible for your own water quality — the county and state do not test or treat your well.
Common Issues:
- Hard water
- Iron & manganese staining
- Sulfur smell
- Coliform bacteria
- Sediment
Annual testing is critical for private well owners.

Armstrong County Water — Answered
Yes. Armstrong County is predominantly rural, and most homes rely on private wells. Several small municipal authorities serve portions of the county, but the majority of residents are responsible for their own water quality testing and treatment.
The geology of Armstrong County includes limestone and other mineral-rich formations. As groundwater moves through these formations, it picks up calcium and magnesium — the minerals that cause hard water. Water softeners effectively remove these minerals.
Orange or rust-colored staining is caused by iron in your well water. When iron-laden water contacts air, it oxidizes and creates visible stains on fixtures, laundry, and appliances. Custom-Designed media filtration removes iron effectively.
That smell is hydrogen sulfide gas, which is common in Armstrong County wells. It’s produced by sulfur bacteria or decaying organic matter underground. While unpleasant and corrosive to plumbing, specialized filtration removes it completely.
At minimum, test annually for bacteria and nitrates. We recommend more comprehensive testing every 2-3 years, or immediately if you notice changes in taste, odor, or appearance. New homeowners should always test before moving in.
Blue-green stains indicate acidic water (low pH) corroding your copper pipes. This can lead to premature plumbing failure and elevated copper levels in drinking water. Acid neutralizing filters correct the pH and protect your plumbing system.
Yes. Reverse osmosis provides premium drinking water filtration. Many customers tell us their RO water “tastes better than bottled.” We offer high-flow systems with optional UV treatment for comprehensive protection.
Costs depend on your water source, specific chemistry, and what issues need addressing. We provide detailed quotes after on-site testing — no pressure, no gimmicks. Every system includes up to a 10-year warranty (terms apply). Financing and system leasing available (terms apply).
Absolutely. We repair and maintain all types of water treatment equipment, regardless of who installed it or the brand. Call 724-708-8816 to schedule service.
The Allegheny is one of only four gravel-bottom rivers in the world, with unique glacial sand deposits. This geology affects local groundwater. Communities along the river may have different water characteristics than inland areas.
