The Mountain Crossing • Est. 1834
Where America
Crossed the Mountain
Named for the Allegheny Portage Railroad—the engineering marvel that conquered the Alleghenies and connected Philadelphia to Pittsburgh. The same determination that built the inclined planes drives our approach to water treatment: engineering solutions that work.
Water Treatment ENGINEERED to Work
The Wonder of America
The Allegheny Portage Railroad changed everything—and gave this town its name.
The Allegheny Portage Railroad began operation—the first railroad to cross the Allegheny Mountains. Ten inclined planes lifted canal boats 2,600 feet over the Continental Divide.
Travel between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh dropped from 23 days by wagon to just 4 days by canal and rail.
The railroad stretched 36 miles with 10 inclined planes, stone viaducts, and America’s first railroad tunnel.
Portage was originally called “Foot of Two”—located at the bottom of Inclined Plane No. 2.
Municipal Water vs. Private Wells in Portage
Portage Water Authority
Borough, Township & Cassandra
Common Concerns We Address:
- Manganese levels requiring attention
- Chlorine taste and odor from disinfection
- Hard water causing scale buildup
- Disinfection byproducts (THMs, HAAs)
- Aging distribution infrastructure
Private Well Water
Rural Portage Township
Common Concerns We Address:
- Hard water (limestone/shale formations)
- Iron staining (orange/rust deposits)
- Manganese staining (black residue)
- Hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg odor)
- Low pH (acidic, corrosive water)
- Coliform bacteria (no required testing)
What Shapes Portage’s Water Quality
Little Conemaugh Valley
Portage sits in the valley of the Little Conemaugh River, surrounded by Allegheny Mountain geology that influences groundwater chemistry.
Reservoir System
Benscreek and Martindale reservoirs supply treated surface water, but aging distribution lines can introduce sediment.
Mining Legacy
Coal and lumber industries built this town. Mining history influences soil composition and groundwater throughout the region.
Historic Housing
Many homes date to the coal boom era. Older plumbing can affect water quality at the tap regardless of treatment plant output.
Infrastructure Upgrades
Major water system improvements are underway—34,500 feet of lines being replaced. Construction may temporarily affect water quality.
Water Treatment by Location
Select your area for specific insights:
Portage Borough
Municipal Authority Water
The historic heart of Portage—the National Register Historic District along Railroad Avenue, Prospect Street, and the downtown core. This is where the Pennsylvania Railroad once ran through the center of town, where the Washington House Hotel served Portage Railroad travelers.
Primary Water Concerns
Borough infrastructure dates to the coal boom era. Manganese levels have been flagged in water quality reports. Chlorine taste is standard from disinfection. The ongoing $16.5 million infrastructure project is replacing lines but may cause temporary water quality fluctuations during construction.
Recommended Solutions
Manganese filtration removes black staining before it reaches fixtures. Carbon filtration eliminates chlorine taste. Water softening prevents scale in historic plumbing. During construction, sediment pre-filtration protects appliances from particulates disturbed by line work.
Portage Township
Mixed Service Areas
Surrounding the borough, Portage Township includes communities like Sonman (named for the Sonman family’s 5,000-acre land grant), Dutch Settlement (German heritage area), and Martindale (near the water treatment plant). Some areas served by municipal water, others on wells.
Primary Water Concerns
Service varies by exact location. Properties near Martindale benefit from proximity to the treatment plant. Outer areas may have longer distribution runs with more opportunity for sediment. Some properties remain on private wells with different challenges entirely.
Recommended Solutions
First step: confirm your actual water source. Municipal vs. well requires completely different treatment approaches. For municipal customers, manganese and chlorine removal are priorities. Township well properties need comprehensive testing first.
Cassandra Borough Area
Portage Water Authority
Cassandra Borough is served by the Portage Water Authority—same source water as Portage Borough proper. Located along the Little Conemaugh River near the historic Allegheny Portage Railroad route, this small community shares water infrastructure with its larger neighbor.
Primary Water Concerns
Same source water means same baseline concerns—manganese, chlorine, and hard water. Cassandra’s position at the edge of the service area may mean longer distribution runs. Smaller community infrastructure may be older in some sections.
Recommended Solutions
Whole-house filtration addresses manganese and chlorine throughout your home. Water softening prevents scale buildup. For drinking water, under-sink RO provides additional purification. We size systems for your specific household flow requirements.
Rural Well Properties
Private Groundwater
Beyond municipal service boundaries, rural Portage Township properties depend on private wells. The same Allegheny Mountain geology that made this region rich in coal also creates challenging groundwater. Pennsylvania requires no ongoing testing—you’re responsible for knowing what’s in your water.
Primary Water Concerns
Mountain geology creates hard, mineral-laden groundwater. Iron and manganese staining are common. Coal region formations can produce low pH and sulfur odor. Mining history means potential for heavy metals. Bacteria can be present with no visible warning.
Recommended Solutions
Laboratory testing is required before any equipment recommendations. Then: Greensand Plus for iron/manganese, acid neutralizer for pH, water softener for hardness, UV disinfection if bacteria present. Every well has unique chemistry—every system must be custom engineered.
