Kennedy Township
Water Filtration

From coal country to comfortable suburb — Kennedy Township transformed itself over a century. The Ohio River water piped through West View Authority hasn’t changed nearly as much as the community it serves.

We test what arrives at your tap, then engineer a system for your home’s actual chemistry.

The Township’s Story

Coal Country to Comfortable Suburb

In 1787, James Speer received a land patent from William Penn and built the first brick house in what would become Kennedy Township. The Clever family followed in 1825, arriving by covered wagon from Carlisle. The first church — Mt. Calvary Evangelical Lutheran — was organized in 1843.

Then came the mines. Gas, oil, and coal extraction defined Kennedy for generations. The coal strikes here were so dramatic they inspired the 1935 film Black Fury. The township was formally incorporated in 1903 and reached first-class status in 1960.

Today, Kennedy is a residential community of 8,700 people — 5.5 square miles of single-family homes, parks, and churches just 10 miles west of downtown Pittsburgh. The mines are quiet. The plumbing from that era isn’t.

“Water enters homes built during coal country’s peak — lead solder, galvanized pipe, brass fixtures. What West View Authority delivers clean, your plumbing changes.”

Your Water Provider

West View Water Authority

Kennedy Township receives municipal water from West View Water Authority, one of the largest water providers in Allegheny County. Their treatment plant sits on Neville Island — right across the back channel from Kennedy’s northern border.

Source: the Ohio River. Treatment capacity: 40 million gallons per day. The process includes granular activated carbon filtration, and the finished water meets or exceeds all federal, state, and local standards.

West View serves 32 municipalities and over 200,000 people across Allegheny, Beaver, and Butler counties. They maintain 10 reservoirs with 39.8 million gallons of storage capacity. A second plant in Baden provides 15 million gallons per day of backup capacity.

Common Issues

What Kennedy Homeowners Experience

Chlorine Taste & Odor

Ohio River water requires heavy disinfection. By the time it reaches Kennedy — miles of pipe from Neville Island — chlorine taste and smell are common complaints, especially in warmer months.

Hard Water Scale

River-sourced water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium. White deposits on faucets, spotted glassware, crusty water heater elements, and dry skin after showering are telltale signs.

Lead from Vintage Plumbing

Kennedy’s oldest neighborhoods date to the early 1900s — when lead solder, galvanized pipe, and lead-containing brass fixtures were standard. Water arrives clean but absorbs whatever your pipes release.

Disinfection Byproducts

When chlorine reacts with organic matter in Ohio River water, it creates byproducts like trihalomethanes. These are regulated but present — whole-house carbon filtration reduces them significantly.

Sediment & Particulates

Aging distribution infrastructure between Neville Island and your home can introduce fine sediment — especially after main breaks, hydrant flushing, or pressure changes in the system.

Our Approach

Why Kennedy Families Choose Cesare’s

River Water Expertise

Ohio River water treated by West View Authority has a specific chemical profile. We design systems matched to that profile — not a generic one-size solution.

Coal Country Homes

Homes built during Kennedy’s mining era have plumbing from the same period. We account for what river water does after entering century-old infrastructure.

Test Before Treat

We analyze your water chemistry before recommending anything. Your system is designed around lab results, not assumptions about what your neighborhood might need.

Local & Accountable

Up to 10-year warranty (terms apply), 24/7 emergency service. Call 724-708-8816 and reach the people who installed your system.

Questions

Kennedy Township Water — Answered

Who provides water to Kennedy Township?

West View Water Authority. Their treatment plant on Neville Island — right across Kennedy’s northern border — draws from the Ohio River and processes up to 40 million gallons daily using granular activated carbon filtration.

Why does my water taste like chlorine?

Ohio River water requires significant disinfection. The chlorine taste can be noticeable throughout Kennedy, especially in warmer months when treatment levels increase. Whole-house Custom-Designed filtration eliminates it.

Is Kennedy Township water hard?

Ohio River water carries dissolved minerals that cause hard water symptoms — scale on fixtures, spotty dishes, dry skin. A custom water softener eliminates hardness at every tap.

Should I worry about lead?

Kennedy’s oldest homes date to the early 1900s, built with lead solder, galvanized pipe, and brass fixtures. Water arrives from West View clean — but can absorb lead from your home’s plumbing. Testing reveals your specific risk.

Does the coal mining history affect water?

Your municipal water comes from the Ohio River, not local groundwater, so mining doesn’t directly affect it. But homes built during the mining era have the same vintage plumbing concerns as any pre-1986 construction.

How much does filtration cost?

Costs depend on your water chemistry and plumbing. We test first, then engineer a system for your actual conditions. Call 724-708-8816 for a consultation.

Do you offer reverse osmosis?

Yes. High-flow RO with optional UV that helps inactivate microorganisms. Finishing options include pH Boost or Mineral Add-Back. Customers say it tastes better than bottled.

What school district is Kennedy in?

Montour School District. David E. Williams Middle School is in the township. Montour Elementary and Montour High School are in neighboring Robinson Township.

What’s your process?

Water chemistry analysis → Custom system design → Professional installation → Ongoing support with up to 10-year warranty (terms apply). Designed for West View’s Ohio River water plus your specific plumbing.

Do you serve all of Kennedy Township?

Every neighborhood across all 5.5 square miles — Fairhaven Park to the Ohio River, McKees Rocks border to Robinson Township. Call 724-708-8816.
