Economy Borough
Water Filtration
An industrial heritage community of 9,000 where the Ohio River shaped both the economy and the water — and where homes spanning a century each tell a different plumbing story.
The Borough Built on Industry
Economy Borough carries its purpose in its name — a community founded on work, built by workers, and sustained by generations who understood that prosperity comes from what you make with your hands. Settled in the 1830s along the Ohio River, Economy grew as industry grew, its neighborhoods filling with families who came to work the mills, factories, and plants that once lined the riverfront.
Today, the steel mills are memories, but the housing stock they built remains: early 20th century workers’ homes near the river, mid-century development pushing up the hills, and newer construction at the borough edges. Each era brought different plumbing — galvanized steel, copper of varying ages, and the lead service lines that were standard before anyone knew better.
The water itself flows through Ohio River valley geology, picking up minerals from bedrock shaped by glaciers and a century of industrial activity. Across all of Beaver County and throughout Southwestern PA, few communities carry this much history in their water lines.
What Economy’s Water Brings Home
Hard Water Scale
Ohio River valley geology delivers calcium and magnesium that build up as white scale on fixtures, reduce water heater efficiency, and leave spots on dishes. This is the most common complaint from Economy homeowners.
Iron & Manganese Staining
Groundwater near the Ohio naturally contains iron and manganese. These minerals leave orange and black stains on porcelain, discolor laundry, and give water a metallic taste. Older galvanized pipes add to the problem.
Chlorine Taste & Odor
Municipal treatment adds chlorine for disinfection — necessary for safety, but noticeable at the tap. Residual levels vary by location in the distribution system. Homes at distribution endpoints notice it most.
Aging Infrastructure
Economy’s housing spans nearly a century. Pre-1950 homes may have lead service lines. Early 1900s construction used galvanized steel that corrodes from inside. Even copper develops issues over decades.
Disinfection Byproducts
When chlorine reacts with organic matter, it creates trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids. These byproducts are regulated but affect taste — and concentrations increase at distribution system endpoints.
Low pH / Corrosive Water
Some Economy water tests slightly acidic — aggressive enough to corrode pipes, leach metals, and leave blue-green stains on fixtures. pH correction protects both plumbing and family health.
Municipal Water in an Ohio River Community
Municipal Water Supply
Economy Borough residents receive water from municipal providers serving the Ohio River valley communities. This water is treated to meet all federal and state standards — but what leaves the plant and what arrives at your 1920s bungalow are two different things.
- Treated to EPA and PA DEP standards
- Chlorine disinfection for pathogen control
- Regular testing and public reporting
- Quality at tap depends on distribution system
Your Home’s Plumbing
In a borough with Economy’s industrial heritage, your internal plumbing matters as much as the source water. Lead service lines, galvanized pipes, and aging copper all add their own chemistry. We test at your tap — not at the plant — to see what you’re actually drinking.
- Pre-1950 homes may have lead service lines
- Galvanized steel corrodes from inside out
- Copper develops pinhole leaks over time
- Testing at your tap reveals the full picture

Economy Water Questions — Answered
Economy Borough residents receive water from municipal providers serving the Ohio River valley communities. The water is treated to meet all federal and state standards before distribution. However, what leaves the treatment plant and what arrives at your tap can differ significantly depending on your home’s age and plumbing.
White scale is caused by calcium and magnesium — the minerals that make water “hard.” Economy’s water travels through Ohio River valley geology rich in these minerals. A custom-engineered water softener designed for your actual hardness level is the most effective long-term solution.
If your home was built before 1950, you may have a lead service line connecting your house to the water main. Even homes with copper plumbing may have lead solder at joints. Lead enters water from your plumbing, not the treatment plant — only testing at your tap reveals the complete picture.
Costs depend on your water chemistry and treatment needs. A simple water softener differs from a multi-stage system addressing hardness, iron, pH, and disinfection byproducts. We provide detailed quotes after testing — no guesswork, no one-size-fits-all pricing. Every system includes up to a 10-year warranty (terms apply).
Orange stains are caused by iron in your water. In Economy, iron can come from groundwater sources or from corroding galvanized pipes inside older homes. Black stains typically indicate manganese. We test to determine the source and design a removal system based on your actual levels.
Yes. We service, repair, and maintain all types of water treatment equipment — including systems we didn’t originally install. Whether your water softener is leaking, your filter needs new media, or your UV system needs attention, we provide responsive repair throughout Economy and Beaver County. Call 724-708-8816 for scheduling.
Yes. We install high-flow reverse osmosis systems that deliver clean, great-tasting drinking water on demand. For municipal water applications, RO is particularly effective at reducing chlorine taste, disinfection byproducts, and dissolved solids. Customers often tell us their water “tastes better than bottled water” after installation.
Economy Borough is served by the Ambridge Area School District. The district serves students from Economy Borough, Ambridge, Baden, Harmony Township, and South Heights — communities that share both educational resources and similar Ohio River valley water infrastructure.
Old Economy Village is a historic site in Ambridge preserving the Harmony Society settlement from the 1820s. While the village itself is in neighboring Ambridge, Economy Borough takes its name from this same historic community. The area’s water infrastructure has evolved significantly since those early days.
We recommend testing whenever you notice changes in taste, odor, color, or pressure. Older Economy homes should test periodically given infrastructure age. If you’ve never tested, now is a good time — professional water analysis is the foundation of every system we design.
