The largest coke plant in North America sits on your riverbank. The Monongahela flows past your door. And water from PA American travels through pipes older than most of the people who use them.

Mon Valley Story

From Empty Fields to Coke Capital

In 1901, the St. Clair Steel Company acquired 392 acres of farmland along the Monongahela River. By 1903, Clairton was incorporated as a borough. By 1916, U.S. Steel had opened the Clairton Coke Works — the first full by-product coke plant in the region and the largest in the United States, with 1,500 ovens processing 12,500 tons of coal every 24 hours.

By 1922, Clairton was a third-class city with 11,000 people. By the 1950s, nearly 20,000 called it home and 7,200 steelworkers made coke here. Then the bottom fell out. Steel declined. Population dropped 70%. Pennsylvania declared Clairton financially distressed for 27 years.

Through it all, the plumbing never changed.

20,000→6,000

Clairton’s population dropped 70% from peak to present — but the water infrastructure built for 20,000 still serves 6,000.

392 Acres

U.S. Steel’s Clairton Coke Works occupies 392 acres along 3.3 miles of riverfront — still the largest coking operation in North America.

Your Water’s Journey Through Clairton

Monongahela River

Source water drawn from the river that flows past the coke works, past coal barges, past a century of Mon Valley industry.

PA American Water Treatment

Treated, disinfected, and tested to meet federal standards. Chlorine added for distribution safety.

Clairton’s Aging Mains

Distribution pipes built when 20,000 people lived here. Now serving 6,000 — but the infrastructure hasn’t been replaced.

Your Home’s Plumbing

Lead solder, galvanized pipe, brass fixtures — standard in homes built before the 1986 ban. Clean water absorbs what your pipes release.

What Clairton Homeowners Face

Industrial-Era Infrastructure

Clairton’s water mains and service lines were installed during the coke boom. Most predate 1950. The system was built for three times the current population and hasn’t seen proportional upgrades.

Lead-Era Plumbing

Homes built from 1903 through the 1940s used lead solder, lead service lines, galvanized pipe, and brass fixtures. Water sits in these materials overnight and absorbs what they release.

Chlorine & Disinfection Byproducts

PA American Water uses chlorine to keep water safe through Clairton’s long distribution runs. When chlorine reacts with organic matter, it creates trihalomethanes and other byproducts.

Hard Water & Scale

Dissolved calcium and magnesium from Monongahela Valley geology create white deposits, spotted dishes, reduced appliance efficiency, and dry skin throughout your home.

Sediment & Discoloration

Oversized mains serving a fraction of their original population create low-flow conditions. Sediment accumulates. Hydrant flushing and pressure changes stir it up — sometimes visibly.

Clairton Water Questions — Answered

Who provides drinking water to Clairton?

Pennsylvania American Water Company provides municipal drinking water. The Clairton Municipal Authority handles sewage/wastewater separately. Contact PA American at 1-800-565-7292 for water billing; contact us at 724-708-8816 for filtration.

Does the Coke Works affect my drinking water?

Your drinking water comes from PA American’s treated supply, not untreated river water. However, the industrial history means aging distribution infrastructure throughout the city. Testing reveals what your specific plumbing contributes to your tap water.

Why does my water taste like chlorine?

PA American uses chlorine disinfection. The taste varies by season and your distance from treatment. Whole-house Custom-Designed filtration eliminates chlorine taste at every tap.

Should I worry about lead?

Clairton’s housing stock dates primarily from 1903 through the 1950s — decades before the 1986 lead-free plumbing law. Lead solder, galvanized pipe, and brass fixtures were standard. Testing confirms your exposure.

Is Clairton water hard?

Mon Valley water carries dissolved minerals causing hardness. White scale, spotted dishes, and dry skin are common. A custom water softener eliminates hardness throughout your home.

How much does filtration cost?

Depends on your water chemistry and plumbing age. We test first, then engineer for your actual conditions. Call 724-708-8816 — no obligation.

Do you offer reverse osmosis?

Yes. High-flow RO with optional UV that helps inactivate microorganisms. Finishing options include pH Boost or Mineral Add-Back. Tastes better than bottled.

What school district is Clairton in?

Clairton City School District.

What’s your process?

Water chemistry analysis → Custom system design → Professional installation → Ongoing support with up to 10-year warranty (terms apply).

Do you serve all of Clairton?

Every neighborhood in all 2.8 square miles — Wilson, Colonial Village, Blair, Southside, Century Townhomes, and the Montour Trail corridor. Call 724-708-8816.
